Rethink factory. Rethink industrial architecture.
How to create environments for industrial production that provide added value for workers? How can industrial architecture be designed with a focus on the workers and taking into account the context of the project, the identity of the site and the companies?
The factory building was planned for a site in Jakobstad, close to the city centre. The neighbouring old industrial area and the nearby historic district of Skata influenced the building's architecture and choice of materials.
The project did not have RTS certification as a goal, but as a master planner with a strong focus on long-term sustainability, Ann Charlott chose to plan the building so that it is de-assembable and reusable, while at the same time she wanted to make the construction industry visible by not encapsulating or covering up the structures and building technology.
The structures and building technology were made visible, for example, in the ceiling of the third floor office section, each technical segment follows its own module line. This choice was made to keep the function of the floor as flexible as possible in case of changing needs. The technology was planned and executed to be able to easily change the room layout - a partition wall should be able to be demolished overnight.
The raw surface of the concrete elements was deliberately left exposed to complement the engineered perfection of the parts and the colours that reflect the identity of the company and the character of the products produced.
